Task 2
UNSDG Life below water
Using the UNSDG image you chose create a visual analysis of the image within 300-350 words.
Fig 1.1 - STRAWS by Jota Han, May 31st 2018, 1200 * 1649 px, Digital drawing Image link |
Phase 1: Observation
This image shows an un-suspecting turtle in the process of getting attacked by a shark. The turtle has surfaced on the ocean while the shark is below. However, the shark is represented by straws in this poster. There is also text written in red at the top with the word 'Straws' on it. The colors found are blue, white, red, magenta and yellow. (63 words)
Phase 2: Analysis
Firstly, there is a big contrast in colors between the shark and the turtle that creates a visually striking image. The shark is cluttered with random brighter colors whilst the turtle and the rest of the ocean is shown in a dull and tame color palette. This shows the power dynamic between the two creatures, or in this case the straws. The word in the image is colored red which gives the feeling of urgency. This emphasis on the vibrant portrayal of the shark captures the viewers immediate attention, directing focus towards the main message of the poster.
The straws in this image are a symbol. This symbol of the straw also uses repetition in a way that creates a sense of unity in the shark. On top of that, by applying the gestalt theory, the shark is also formed in a way that lets us interpret the shape of the shark within the random placement of the straws.
Furthermore, the composition guides the viewer in a deliberate manner. The overall movement of the artwork flows upward, starting with the shark at the bottom. As you move upward, they transition towards the turtle and finally reaches the message of the poster. (201 words)
Phase 3: Interpretation
This is the artist Jota Han's submission of artists against plastic movement by the instagram page 'byebyestraws'. I find that his poster is also very similar to other submissions for the event done by Dani Garreton and Lirios Bou. They both use a very cartoony comic book look while also adding elements of humor into there images. All the images are in the digital illustration artstyle. (74 words)
