The urban legend:

For the urban legend I decided to pick one from my home country, Maldives called foolhudhigu handi. It roughly translates to long-navelled monster. It’s an old folk story about a creature that people claim to have seen near strange places digging at skulls. As for the appearance of the creature, there are a few interpretations that are commonly drawn. However, it is usually drawn with a large navel and a demonic appearance.

Process:

First thing I did was come up with a design for the creature.I went through several designs for the creature before I landed on one.

I ended up going for a less detailed and dog-like character. Then I began sketching the compostion of the final piece.

Fig 1.4

My thought process on the final compostion is that a stopped car in the woods turns on its headlights and reveals the monster. I also tried to incorporate this into the animation. I wanted to have the car in the foreground, the monster in the mid ground and the forest as the background

I then went to Illustrator in order to finalise the character. I first started by inking out my sketch.

Then i colored and textured the character.

Afterwards, I started working on the scene in illustrator.

On my first iteration i was not very happy with the colors i used and the background looked very flat.

I was much happier with the colors I used for this version and how the background and midground are more clearly seperated. I also added the headlights to the car.

Final compostion:

Artist statement:

This urban legend is one the recides from the Maldives. It is a demon-like long naveled monster. It is known for terrorizing the local inhabitants of the island by lurking and preying on them. As for the composition, I went with a scene where the person in the car has stopped it because they felt like they were being watched. The eerie feeling overwhelmed them as they turned on there headlights. Then suddenly appeared Foolhudhigu Handi, face to face with the car.
With this artwork I used a purple and orange color scheme in order to create make the artwork more visually striking and contrasting. Also purple is commonly associated with a sense of mystery and supernatural activity. However, contrasted by the warmer color of the orange it creates a sense of urgency and danger. I also wanted to capture a surreal and dreamlike atmosphere.
